HWW User Case Study: BeerFest 2010

The Tasmanian Beerfest is now Australia’s largest and most successful beer festival. Entrepreneur Ben Hickey, co- organiser of the revamped event, has developed and grown the festival with an enormous amount of hard work and effort. In 2010, 10,000 visitors streamed through the gates over the two-day event and thanks to the technology provided by the Wireless Tasmania HWW Network, organisers were able to survey each person as they went through quickly and easily.

“We needed a product that would allow us to survey people quickly and painlessly as they walked into the arena as well as automatically generate the results of the survey without the need for a huge amount of time and manual labour.”  “The ability to use an internet based product was perfect for us, the network was fast and reliable, our staff and visitors were extremely happy and as a result next year we are looking to extend our involvement with Wireless Tasmania” Mr Hickey said.

The data collected was simple, postcodes to identify where visitors were coming from, how long they were staying for in Tasmania. The results of the data showed that people were coming from places as far away as Papua New Guinea, Thailand, UK, New Zealand and Ireland specifically to visit the Tasmanian Beerfest, demonstrating a huge success for the organising team.  “The results will be used to demonstrate the economic value that this growing event brings to the state and will continue to bring into the future, it’s a great promotion of how much Hobart and the whole state has to offer,” Mr Hickey said.

In the two months leading up to Tasmanian Beerfest the official website had over 500,000 hits and with the availability of Wireless Tasmania in coming years, the Tasmanian Beerfest will be able to capitalise on the popularity of the website to ramp up their online presence.  “We are looking into the development of an iPhone app and to become more involved in social media and potentially online streaming, little things that will continually give visitors a great experience over the coming years,” Mr Hickey said.
