HWW User Case Study:Cancer Council Tasmania

The Cancer Council of Tasmania is a not-for-profit organisation that works to minimise the impact of cancer on all Tasmanian’s through advocacy, raising awareness of cancer prevention and offering advice and support to those living with cancer and their carers.

It is common to see Cancer Council of Tasmania booths and representatives at many of Tasmania’s major outdoor attractions and festivals. Most recently the Cancer Council of Tasmania had a presence at The Taste Festival and Australian Wooden Boat Festival held on Hobart’s waterfront where they were not only distributing sunscreen to visitors but also selling a wide range of Cancer Council of Tasmania merchandise in a trade booth replica of their Collins Street store.

The challenge for organisations selling products at events is that it is not cost effective for them to sign up to a fixed Wi-Fi plan, making them reliant on USB 3G type connections to try and process transactions at events. For the Cancer Council of Tasmania attending a number of events each year this becomes expensive and limits operations to purely processing transactions, leaving the booth attendants blind to inventory levels and the sales success of individual products at events.

Utilising the Wireless Tasmania Network, Cancer Council of Tasmania was able to replicate their existing store in a temporary area, running full inventory tracking, have full visibility of stock supplies and process transactions quickly and efficiently.

“The true value is that Wireless Tasmania is a fully operational network, complete with backup and a service guarantee should the team have any issues. We were running our operations at full speed, processing hundreds of transactions each day and connecting effectively to our point of sale systems in Collins Street,” says Andrew How, IT Manager for Cancer Council of Tasmania

“During the Taste and Australian Wooden Boat Festivals we were pushing a lot of data back and forwards, syncing with inventory and the whole system ran seamlessly. It was like we had an entirely portable business system and full shop front activities running at the festival,” says Andrew.

Wireless Tasmania operates on TasmaNet infrastructure and the service guarantee includes TasmaNet staff being available to set up the system, troubleshoot and ensure that the network and operations are fully functional before the booth staff arrive.
“Having the full support of the TasmaNet technical staff was a huge benefit of the Wireless Tasmania service. We had one technical issue during the event and within 30 minutes a TasmaNet representative was there to fix the problem.

This took a lot of pressure off our booth staff who, without the technical support would have been left to manually process transactions and without the benefits of inventory monitoring,” says Andrew.

“The benefit to us of running on the Wireless Tasmania network as opposed to a 3G type connection was fairly extensive. We were able to streamline our event products to be better prepared for future events, the time taken to set up the transaction equipment was significantly lower with technical support and we were able to actively anticipate inventory needs as they occurred. As a service the Wireless Tasmania network was great for us and we will definitely use it again,” says Andrew.

These sentiments were reinforced by Cancer Council Tasmania CEO Mr Darren Carr.

“Having access to Wireless Tasmania Network at events such as The Australian Wooden Boat Festival and the Taste of Tasmania Festival was enormously beneficial for Cancer Council Tasmania. The opportunity to access this type of technology helps us maintain a focus on our aim to minimise the impact of cancer on all Tasmanians by opening up more opportunities to have a presence at such high profile community events
.
As an organisation that relies on the generosity of donations, the cost effectiveness of having access to such a resource is highly favourable. The costs associated with setting up our own wireless network for such events would be counterproductive towards Cancer Council Tasmania’s goal”

“Cancer Council Tasmania benefited greatly working alongside responsive Telco partners such as TECC and Tasmanet. The opportunity to continue this partnership at events locally and in other regions where Wireless Tasmania Wi-Fi is supported would be significant.”said Mr Carr.
